| On March 6, 1971 the first traditional Jewish
Sabbath morning service was held in Lawrence Township by members of a group of several
orthodox Jewish families, in a home located at the corner of Lannigan and Glenn Avenues.
This group, and others pleased to make up the minyan, continued to meet informally as the
"Minyanaires of Lawrence Township." Regular Sabbath and Holiday services were
held in the homes of various members. As the weeks progressed, the participants found the
intimacy and involvement of a small group particularly inspiring. Within a year or two
this congregation achieved a critical mass, leading to its incorporation and its joining
the international Young Israel Movement, a modern orthodox organization of synagogues in
the United States and Israel. |
| Subsequently, a search for a permanent home was
undertaken that lasted many years. During this period, the congregation conducted its
activities in a variety of places. The congregation found its present home at 2556
Princeton Pike and Lannigan Avenue, in 1990. Ironically, this was only a short distance
from the house where its first service had been held in 1971. Planning Board approval was
obtained in May 1990 and the first service in the new building was held on Friday night,
June 14th, 1991. |
| During its twenty years as the only Orthodox
Synagogue in Lawrenceville, the congregation has been fortunate in its elected officers
and chosen Rabbis, all of whom have worked hard to make the services beautiful and
inspiring. Our present president is Charles Miller and our rabbi is Rabbi
Yehuda Goldenberg. |
| The modern orthodox philosophy represented by the
international Young Israel Movement seeks to revitalize traditional Jewish values and give
them relevance in modern day society. In a society that is constantly changing we believe
that there are eternal values that should be preserved. We therefore emphasize the
importance of study in our synagogue. Classes may range from a crash class for beginners
in reading Hebrew to the study of the Talmud. |
| In addition to its services, the congregation's
strong sense of community is shown in many events at which congregants gather throughout
the year. These include an annual "Shabbaton," where an entire Sabbath is spent
together, in prayer, in singing, in participating in communal meals and in discussing a
broad range of topics of Jewish interest, usually led by an eminent, visiting Rabbi. Other
joyful communal occasions have included parties and /or festive meals at the time of
Simchat Torah, Chanukah, Purim, and also Passover Seders. |
| Young Israel of Lawrenceville is a vibrant,
enthusiastic congregation with an intimacy and warmth that is sometimes absent from larger
synagogues. We continue to grow and heartily welcome all those interested in traditional
Jewish values and prayer. For more information call us at 609-883-8833. Come join a
synagogue, where youll feel both special and wanted. Try us, youll like us! |
